Kyrgyzstan is a driving country. The places worth the trip sit 100 to 300 km apart, the marshrutkas stop at the main road, and the best of it, Song-Kul, the south shore of Issyk-Kul, the Alay valley, is reached on gravel tracks that no bus takes. A rental car turns a week of shared taxis and waiting into a loop you set yourself. It also means tunnel tolls, a zero alcohol limit, camera fines from June 2026 and passes that close with the first snow, so this guide covers the roads and the rules as well as the companies.
Prices in Bishkek, as of November 2026, run from about $30 to $45 a day for an older sedan, $65 to $70 for a Forester-class crossover and $100 to $150 for a 4Runner or Prado, with deposits of $300 to $500 at most companies. Disclosure: WeRent (werent.kg) is run by the team behind Mostly Mountain. It is in the list below with the same facts as everyone else, and we say where our opinion comes in.
The list starts with six Bishkek companies, each pinned at its office, with three more and the Osh option in the notes. Then come the five roads that decide which car you need: Too-Ashuu, the new North-South road, the pass up to Song-Kul, the Issyk-Kul loop and the Pamir Highway to Sary-Tash. The rules, costs and paperwork are at the end, with the date we checked each one.

Six Bishkek companies with a real office, a published price or a published set of terms, and a photo of their own cars, checked on 5 November 2026; three more, and the one Osh outfit we could price, are in the notes below. Pins mark the office. Prices change with the season, so treat them as a guide to the range, not a quote.
1WeRent
No deposit, full Casco and unlimited kilometres, in Bishkek and Osh
Disclosure: WeRent (werent.kg) is run by the team behind Mostly Mountain. The facts here are what the website said on 5 November 2026, checked the same way as every other entry. The fleet is eight models, seven of them four-wheel drive: a Toyota Prius for the asphalt, Subaru XV and Forester and two generations of Jeep Renegade for graded gravel, and Toyota 4Runners and a Land Cruiser Prado for the rough end, Kel-Suu and the upper Alay included. Each car has a road class written into the contract, and driving beyond it breaks the agreement.
Rates in November 2026: the 2015 to 2017 Jeep Renegade is $85 a day, falling to $70 on rentals of 14 days or more; the Prius and the Forester are $100 a day for 2 to 3 days and $85 at 14 days or more; the 2020 to 2025 4Runner is $130 to $105 and the Prado $150 to $120 on the same scale. There is no deposit on any car, no prepayment, and no mileage cap. Full Casco is in every booking, with third-party cover to $50,000, and it applies on official roads only: damage on a mountain track is not covered even in a car allowed there. Drivers must be 21 with a year on the licence, and a licence in a script other than Latin or Cyrillic needs an IDP or a notarised translation.
Delivery is free to the Manas arrivals hall and anywhere in Bishkek, day or night; an Osh pick-up or drop-off at the airport or in town is $70 each way, and returning in a different city within Kyrgyzstan is allowed. Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan are allowed with a $50 permit per booking and three working days' notice; Tajikistan is not. The team answers on WhatsApp around the clock in English and Russian. Our opinion, for what it is worth: it is not the cheapest car in Bishkek, but with the deposit, the kilometres and the Casco folded in, we think it is the best value for a mountain loop.

2AYDO (formerly Travel Land)
The 4x4-only specialist, with the strictest rules and the clearest small print
AYDO is the self-drive arm of Travel Land, the Bishkek tour operator that opened its office in 2016, and the old Travel Land rental site now redirects to aydo.kg. It rents nothing but four-wheel drives: twelve models, from a Lada Niva and a UAZ Bukhanka van to the Toyota 4Runner, Fortuner, Sequoia, Land Cruiser 100, Mitsubishi Pajero and Nissan Patrol, all petrol, with a rooftop tent available for €30 a day. Prices depend on the season and the length of the rental and show only in the booking form for your dates.
The terms are the most detailed we found, which is a point in their favour. Drivers must be 25 to 75 with five years on a category B licence; a second driver is free. The deposit is 30,000 som held on a physical Visa or Mastercard credit card, no cash and no virtual cards. Insurance is included but not comprehensive: the excess is $300 per incident, third-party cover goes to 1,000,000 som, and tyres, glass, lights, underbody and suspension are excluded unless you add the €11-a-day extra cover. Mileage is unlimited. The cars may not leave Kyrgyzstan, the Arabel pass is banned outright and the MELS pass to Tash Rabat is allowed only in dry weather.
There is no airport hand-over: every car is collected and returned at the office between 09:00 and 18:00, and a transfer from Manas to the office costs €35. The office is on the street that was Molodaya Gvardiya boulevard until the city renamed it Imanaly Aidarbekov street on 28 April 2026, so older maps still show the old name. Border-zone permits for Kel-Suu and the Naryn frontier come through Travel Land at €49 for one traveller, down to €30 each for five or more.

3Nomad Car Rental
The widest spread, from a $40 Kia to a Jeep Wrangler, with a driver option
Nomad Car Rental (Nomad Avto LLC) has the longest catalogue of the Bishkek companies: a Kia K3 from $40 a day, a 2024 Hyundai Elantra from $50, a 2018 Toyota Camry from $70, Kia Sorento and SsangYong Rexton four-wheel drives, a 2026 Kia Seltos, a Honda CR-V, Kia Carnival minivans, and at the top a 2014 Land Cruiser Prado from $150 and a 2019 Jeep Wrangler, Nissan Terra or Rexton from $140 (November 2026). It is also one of the local suppliers behind the Localrent booking platform.
The deposit is $300 for sedans and crossovers and $500 for SUVs, the Jeep and the minivans. Mileage is 250 km a day on the standard tariff, with an unlimited option for a surcharge. OSAGO and KASKO are included, but the KASKO carries a franchise whose amount is not stated, so ask. Drivers must be 21 with two years' experience. Kazakhstan (Almaty) and Uzbekistan (Tashkent) are possible case by case with route approval and a special permit.
Delivery to Manas is from 1,000 som, a car with a driver from 1,500 som a day (compulsory for the minibuses), and a child seat or GPS from 300 and 500 som a day. Payment is cash, card or online in dollars, som or roubles, with free cancellation 24 hours before. The office, number 306 at Bakaeva 140/3 in the Jal district, works 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and takes requests at any hour; it scores 5.0 from 69 reviews on 2GIS.

4AutoPark (Autotravel)
Forty-eight cars, no prepayment, and the cheapest sedans we found
AutoPark, which now trades online as Autotravel Kyrgyzstan, has 48 cars and says it has been renting for more than eight years. The price list is the lowest of the companies with a real office: a 2014 Hyundai Accent from $30 a day, a 2014 Toyota Camry from $40 and a 2017 Camry from $60, a RAV4, Forester or Outback from $70, a 2008 or 2009 FJ Cruiser from $90, a 2018 to 2020 4Runner from $130 and a Lexus GX 460 or Toyota Sequoia from $150 (November 2026).
There is no prepayment, you pay at pick-up, and the minimum rental is three days. Basic insurance is in the price with extended cover optional, the cars stay inside Kyrgyzstan, and an airport meet-and-greet with a full tank is offered, as is a driver or guide, with neither fee published. The deposit, the mileage cap and the minimum age are not on the website, so ask before you book.
The office is number 107 at Turusbekova 109/1, in the business centre that 2GIS calls Asia Trade Company and OpenStreetMap calls Maximum, open 08:00 to 18:00 every day; the 2GIS score is 4.4 from 100 reviews.

5Russian Troika
The old hand, renting since at least 2014, with Subarus and a Dodge RAM
Russian Troika (Russkaya Troika, avtoprokat.kg) is one of the oldest renters in Bishkek: its online question-and-answer page runs from January 2014 to April 2026, and forum regulars count it among the few firms with more than ten years behind them. The fleet is economy to all-wheel drive: Honda Fit, Toyota Prius, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sportage, Lexus RX300, Subaru Outback, Forester and Ascent, and a Dodge RAM pickup with a rooftop tent. Prices show only in the booking calendar, with a 10 to 15% discount for prepayment (March 2026).
The terms come from the company's own replies: a deposit of usually $300 in cash or on a card, with damage under that sum paid from it; CASCO and OSAGO on every car; 300 km a day pooled over the rental, with 20 som per extra kilometre (2025); drivers 23 or over with at least a year and a half on the licence; Kyrgyzstan only; and no cars with a driver.
Manas pick-up or return is 2,500 som at any hour (December 2025), and a one-way return in Osh costs the Osh delivery charge of 18,000 som. The office at Chernyshevskogo 65 is open 08:00 to 20:00.

6Prestige
Crossovers at $65 to $70 a day, since 2013
Prestige (rentcars.kg) has rented cars in Bishkek since 2013 and keeps to crossovers and SUVs: a 2018 Subaru Forester, a 2019 Outback, 2018 and 2022 RAV4s and a 2018 Hyundai Santa Fe are all $65 to $70 a day, a 2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser is $80 to $90, and the cheapest car is a 2001 Lexus RX300 at $40 to $45 (November 2026). A 2025 round-up by the Bishkek outlet WeProject lists it among the city's rental firms, with insurance included and a car with driver available.
What the website does not publish is the deposit, the mileage cap, the minimum age, the airport fee or the border rules, so ask for all five by WhatsApp before you commit. The office is at Lva Tolstogo 24/1, an address a second rental brand also uses, so make sure you are talking to Prestige.

The roads you will drive
Five stretches of road that decide what car you need and when you can go. Pins mark the pass, the border post or the town the road is known by.
7Too-Ashuu pass
The 3,586 m pass on the Bishkek to Osh road
Every drive from Bishkek to Osh goes over Too-Ashuu, the 3,586 m pass above Kara-Balta, through a 2.8 km tunnel just below the top. Bishkek to Osh is about 510 km by road and more than 7 hours of pure driving on OpenStreetMap routing, before stops, trucks and the second pass, Ala-Bel. Plan a full day or break it at Toktogul.
The tunnels are tolled. A government decree of 25 February 2026 set the fee at 50 som per car on Kyrgyz and Eurasian Economic Union plates and 200 som on foreign plates, collected at the Sosnovka and Kara-Kul posts. A rental on Kyrgyz plates pays the 50 som rate.
In winter the Ministry of Transport tells drivers to fit winter tyres and carry chains, and at the Sosnovka and Kara-Kul posts cars have been checked for tyres, chains and a shovel and turned back without them. An avalanche on Ala-Bel closed the road on 10 and 11 March 2026. Passenger minibuses are banned from the pass from 15 October 2026 to 15 May 2027; cars are not. Ten kilometres of the pass road (km 130 to 146) got new asphalt in the 2026 season.

8The North-South road
The 433 km shortcut from Balykchy to Jalal-Abad, open June to November
The alternative North-South road runs 433 km from Balykchy on Issyk-Kul through Kochkor and Kazarman to Jalal-Abad, with a tunnel of about 3.8 km under the Kok-Art pass. Building started in 2014, and on 1 June 2026 it opened to traffic for the first time as a seasonal route: June to November, daylight hours only, 06:00 to 20:00. Full commissioning is planned for 2028.
The Ministry of Transport says it cuts Jalal-Abad to Balykchy from 13 hours to about 6, which makes a loop of Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul and the south possible without going back through Bishkek. The Kok-Art tunnel toll is 100 som per car, 200 som on foreign plates (2026).
It is a new mountain road, and in its first week a rockfall at km 270 to 271 stopped traffic on 4 June 2026; it reopened on one lane while the debris was cleared. Check the Ministry of Transport's bulletins before relying on it, and don't plan to drive it after dark.

9Kalmak-Ashuu pass to Song-Kul
The easiest road up to the lake, and still gravel
Song-Kul has three road approaches, and the one most drivers use is from Kochkor via Sary-Bulak over the 3,446 m Kalmak-Ashuu pass to the north-east shore. It is about 85 km from Sary-Bulak on a maintained gravel track, and 5 km of it (km 8.6 to 13.6) were surfaced with asphalt in August 2026. From Bishkek it is 194 km to Kochkor and another 123 km to the lake.
The pass is cleared by snow-blower at the end of May and closes with the first snowfall in late October, which is the lake's driving season. The other two roads, Moldo-Ashuu from Naryn and Kara-Keche from the Jumgal valley, are rougher, with big altitude changes and, on Moldo-Ashuu, dense fog; Wikivoyage puts them in 4x4 territory.
Fill up in Kochkor or Naryn. A traveller in June 2026 found no open station on the long stretch from Song-Kul to Naryn and the first station in Naryn took 44 litres into a 50-litre tank. There is no mobile signal at the lake. Our Song-Kul guide has the camps and the passes in detail.

10The Issyk-Kul loop
Two shores, about 400 km from Bishkek to Karakol either way
Issyk-Kul is the drive most renters make, and the lake can be circled: from Balykchy at the western tip it is 222 km to Karakol along the north shore through Ananyevo and Tup, and 218 km along the south shore through Bokonbaevo. Bishkek to Karakol is about 400 km and 6.5 hours of driving by the north shore on OpenStreetMap routing, and 408 km by the south.
The south shore has the canyons, the salt lake and the eagle hunters; the north has the resorts and most of the traffic. Our Issyk-Kul guide sorts the stops by shore.
It is also a road to drive by the book. In early 2026 the Ministry of Internal Affairs commissioned Avtouragan camera units on the Bishkek to Balykchy, Cholpon-Ata and Karakol road, linked to the Safe City database, recording speeding, unfastened belts, phones at the wheel and driving into the oncoming lane. Keep to 90 km/h outside the towns and 60 inside.

11The Pamir Highway to Sary-Tash
Paved from Osh over the 3,615 m Taldyk pass to the Tajik border road
From Osh the M41 Pamir Highway climbs 186 km, about 2.3 hours on OpenStreetMap routing, to Sary-Tash, the crossroads village where the roads to Tajikistan and China part. The whole stretch is paved and crosses the Taldyk pass, cited at 3,615 m, so an ordinary car can do it in summer.
Sary-Tash to the Bor-Dobo border post is another 45 km, and the Kyzyl-Art pass on the border itself is 4,280 m. The crossing is open 24 hours. The Kyrgyz border-zone permit required between 2023 and 2025 has not been needed since the summer of 2025, but a GBAO permit is still needed on the Tajik side.
Whether you can take the car over is a question for your contract, not the border. Most Kyrgyz rental companies keep their cars inside Kyrgyzstan; AYDO, for example, has suspended Tajikistan since 2022 and never allowed Uzbekistan. A day trip from Osh to Sary-Tash and back needs no paperwork at all.

More companies, and driving in Kyrgyzstan
Three more Bishkek companies and the Osh option first, then the rules, costs and paperwork, with the date we checked each figure. The law changed a lot in 2025 and 2026.
- Cab Car Rental: the company for anyone who wants a Toyota four-wheel drive priced in som. Its list runs to about thirty cars, from a Chevrolet Cobalt at 2,000 to 2,500 som a day and a 2020 Corolla at 3,200 to 4,000 som, through a Camry 70 at 5,600 to 7,000 som and a Lada Niva at 4,000 to 5,000 som, to FJ Cruisers, 4Runners from 2004 to a 2020 TRD Pro, three generations of Prado and Land Cruiser 100 and 200, all 8,000 to 10,000 som a day for the 2018 4Runner, the Prado 150 and the 200 (November 2026). KASKO and OSAGO are included; the deposit, mileage cap and minimum age are not published. Pick-up is at the office at Ryskulova 79B or at Manas airport; the company dates itself to 2013 and scores 4.8 from 69 reviews on 2GIS.
- SK Rent a Car: the Korean end of the market, a 2018 Hyundai Sonata from $45 a day, a 2017 Santa Fe from $65, a 2017 Kia Sorento or Kia Carnival minivan from $70 and a Hyundai Starex van from $80 (November 2026), with KASKO and OSAGO included and Visa, Mastercard and Mir accepted. There is no true off-roader in the list and the company itself recommends a Toyota 4x4 for mountain roads. Its useful trick is delivery to the Issyk-Kul airport at Tamchy by prior arrangement. The office is in the AIBI business centre at Zhukeeva-Pudovkina 44/1, open 09:00 to 18:00 daily.
- Renting in Osh: Osh has a dozen rental listings on 2GIS but only one outfit with a published 4x4 rate we could check: Oibek, the former manager of the MuzToo motorbike base, whose Land Cruiser 70, 80 and 105, Prado 95, Montero, Lexus GX 470 and Mercedes G-300 are booked through the Rent2explore platform (OunTravela) and takecars.com. The rate is a flat €110 a day for any car on rentals of 1 to 14 days, €100 for 15 to 22 days and €90 beyond, for use inside Kyrgyzstan, or €130, €120 and €110 with Tajikistan added for the Pamir Highway; the deposit is €500, mileage is unlimited and all-damage cover is included for Kyrgyzstan. The two platforms disagree on the minimum age and on whether borders may be crossed, so confirm in writing. Hand-over is in Osh or at the airport by agreement. MuzToo itself now trades as AlaToo Moto and rents motorbikes only. WeRent and Russian Troika also hand over in Osh, at $70 and 18,000 som a way.
- Localrent and the booking platforms: Localrent.com lists local Kyrgyz companies (Nomad Car Rental is one) with pick-up at the supplier's office, Manas or Osh airport, the railway station or your hotel. You pay 15 to 20% online and the balance to the supplier at the car. Read its Kyrgyzstan terms before you book: the cars are for paved public roads only, and Kel-Suu, Chatyr-Kul, Torugart, Arabel, Sary-Tash to Kyzyl-Art, the Alay valley, Song-Kul and Tash Rabat are all on the prohibited list, with insurance void there. Wheels, underbody, windscreen and interior are outside the standard cover. Rent2explore (OunTravela) and takecars.com do the same job for private 4x4 owners in Bishkek and Osh.
- Iron Horse Nomads, and Karakol: two things we were asked about and can't recommend. Iron Horse Nomads, the 4x4 company founded in Bishkek around 2013, now lists only an Almaty office; its website was offline on 5 November 2026, and archived copies from 2026 warn that the Bishkek numbers are no longer valid and that other people are falsely claiming its name in Kyrgyzstan. Karakol has no rental company with an office and a price list that we could find, only private classified ads; the Bishkek firms deliver to the lake instead, SK Rent a Car to the Tamchy airport by arrangement and Russian Troika to Karakol for a fee it last quoted in 2024.
- Licence and age: Kyrgyzstan joined the 1968 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic on 30 August 2006, so a national licence from another convention country is recognised. The UK Foreign Office says a UK licence is enough for up to 30 days and that the 1968 International Driving Permit is needed for longer (advice updated December 2025); Canada tells its citizens to carry one (October 2026). Get the IDP before you fly: it is cheap, and it settles the question at a checkpoint. Rental companies set their own minimums above the law: AYDO asks for 25 years of age and 5 years on the licence (2025), and others ask for at least a year of experience.
- Insurance and deposits: Third-party insurance (OSAGO) is compulsory. The law has been in force since 2015, but fines for private drivers were only enforced from 1 September 2025: 3,000 som for an individual, 13,000 som for a company or a foreign-registered car. A rental should come with a valid policy, so ask to see it. OSAGO pays only the other party, up to 150,000 som in property damage per victim and 300,000 som for a death (2025); damage to your own car is covered by the company's terms. AYDO includes insurance with a deductible and offers no full all-risk cover, with broken windows excluded. Across the market, deposits are often 300 to 500 USD and frequently in cash, and tyres, windscreen and underbody are often excluded (Indy Guide, August 2025). Get the excess in writing.
- Speed, alcohol and fines: The limits are 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside; a 110 km/h limit exists on paper for signed dual carriageways but had not been switched on by late 2023. The blood-alcohol limit is zero. Law No. 81 of 5 June 2026 rewrote the penalties: 30,000 som and a two-year ban for drunk driving, 100,000 som and three years for refusing a test, 20,000 som and six months for leaving the scene of an accident, 1,000 som for driving without your documents on you. From 1 June 2026 cameras nationwide fine unfastened seat belts (1,000 som), phones at the wheel, speeding and driving into the oncoming lane, and the same law says every camera must be signed. A camera notice goes to the car's registered owner, so ask the company how it passes fines on before you sign.
- If the police stop you: Patrol police run checkpoints on the main roads and ID checks in towns, so keep your passport, licence and the car's registration with you. The UK Foreign Office's advice is that an officer should hand you a paper copy of any fine with payment instructions, to be paid at a terminal or a bank, never in cash to the officer. Canada adds that thieves posing as police have demanded on-the-spot fines from foreigners; offer to go to the nearest police station instead. The emergency numbers are 112 for everything and 102 for the police.
- Fuel: Stations sell AI-92, AI-95, diesel and autogas, and Bishkek Petroleum also sells AI-100. In Bishkek on 3 September 2026 AI-92 was 87.80 to 87.90 som a litre, AI-95 99.90 to 109.90 som, diesel 99.90 som and autogas 48.80 som, across Rosneft, Partnerneft, Bishkek Petroleum, Red Petroleum and Jolgo. More than 90% of the country's petrol comes from Russia, and in July and August 2026 AI-95 ran short at some Bishkek stations while AI-92 held up, so a car that is happy on 92 is an advantage. Outside Bishkek and Osh stations are scarce and diesel is often unavailable; fill up before any mountain road and carry cash for fuel.
- Kazakhstan via Korday: Korday, called Ak-Zhol on the Kyrgyz side, is the main crossing between Bishkek and Almaty: open 24 hours, with currency exchange on both sides. Ak-Tilek further east is for commercial trucks only, and from the Issyk-Kul side the Karkara valley crossing (Kegen to Tup) has been open all year since 2025, with about 85 km of gravel on the Kyrgyz side. Taking a rental across needs the company's written permission and the car's papers: Kazakhstan asks for the registration document and a power of attorney from the owner when the driver is not the owner, and since 1 May 2025 Kyrgyzstan requires a notarised general power of attorney to enter the country in a car registered to someone else, which is what a rental is on the way back. In 2026 AYDO allows its cars in Kyrgyzstan only; older company answers mention Kazakhstan with a cross-border fee. Just past the Kyrgyz side of Korday there is a stop sign watched by traffic police; stop fully.
- Uzbekistan and Tajikistan: The Dostuk crossing between Osh and Andijan is open 24 hours with a lunch break from 13:15 to 13:45, and cars have been allowed through again since 2019. Kyzyl-Art on the Pamir Highway is open 24 hours and no longer needs a Kyrgyz permit since the summer of 2025, though the Tajik side still wants a GBAO permit. After the border treaty of 13 March 2025, the Kairagach and Kyzyl-Bel crossings into Tajikistan reopened. None of that helps unless your company allows it: AYDO has suspended Tajikistan since 2022 and has never allowed Uzbekistan, and the companies in our list that allow any crossing say so in their entry.
- Winter: There is no winter-tyre law we could find, only the Ministry of Transport's standing advice to fit winter tyres and carry chains, backed by checks at the Sosnovka and Kara-Kul posts on the Bishkek to Osh road. The Kynda pass road in Naryn region closed from 6 November to 1 April in the 2025 to 2026 winter, the North-South road closes in November, and the Emergencies Ministry issues avalanche warnings for Too-Ashuu and Ala-Bel through April.
- If you would rather not drive: A shared taxi from Bishkek to Karakol was 1,000 to 1,500 som in 2025, and marshrutkas from 500 som. Yandex Go works in Bishkek, where an electric-car tariff launched in November 2025 (a 4 km ride was quoted at 201 som), and in Karakol. For the mountains, a local driver with a 4x4 costs about 3,000 to 6,000 som a day around Issyk-Kul and Song-Kul (traveller estimates, 2025), and 15,000 to 16,000 som per vehicle from Naryn to Kel-Suu (June 2026). Indy Guide's view (August 2025) is that a driver with his own 4x4 often costs about the same as renting one yourself once fuel, deposit and insurance gaps are counted.
Tips for renting a car in Kyrgyzstan
- Match the car to the roads. A sedan is fine for Bishkek, the Chuy valley, the Issyk-Kul loop and the paved road from Osh to Sary-Tash. Song-Kul, Kel-Suu and the North-South road want a 4x4 with ground clearance, and the companies that know their cars will say which passes a car may not cross: AYDO bans the Arabel pass outright and allows the MELS pass to Tash Rabat only in dry weather.
- Photograph everything at pick-up. Walk round the car and film every panel, the windscreen, the tyres and the underbody before you sign, with the agent in the frame if they agree. Windows, tyres and the underbody are the parts most often excluded from cover, so they are the parts most often argued about at return.
- Carry cash. Deposits are often taken in cash, the tunnel tolls on the Bishkek to Osh road (50 som a car) and the North-South road (100 som) are paid at the post, and fuel outside the cities is a cash purchase. Our money guide goes live on 11 November.
- Fill up before the mountains. Fill the tank in the last town before a pass. A traveller in June 2026 found nothing open on the long stretch from Song-Kul to Naryn, and diesel is often missing in the regions. Download offline maps too: there is no mobile signal at Song-Kul.
- Addresses changed in 2026. Bishkek merged a run of streets in 2026: Deng Xiaoping and Shabdan Baatyr avenues are now part of Chuy avenue, Gorky is Ankara street, Baytik Baatyr is Zhusup Abdrakhmanov street. Office addresses on older listings may use the old names, so navigate by pin, not by street name.
- Airport pick-ups moved. Manas airport has been rebuilt in stages through 2026: a new part of the terminal opened on 14 May with the entrance on the west side, and the central entrance reopened on 13 July, with works continuing. Agree a meeting point by message the day before, and expect the company to meet you at the terminal rather than at a desk, because there is no rental counter inside.
Questions people ask
Is it worth renting a car in Kyrgyzstan?
For Issyk-Kul, Song-Kul and the Naryn region, yes: the places worth driving to are 100 to 300 km apart and most have no public transport beyond the main road. For Bishkek alone, no; Yandex Go and marshrutkas cover the city, and day trips like Ala-Archa and Burana have shared taxis and tours.
Do I need an International Driving Permit in Kyrgyzstan?
Kyrgyzstan recognises licences from other 1968 Vienna Convention countries, and the UK Foreign Office says a UK licence alone is fine for up to 30 days. For longer stays carry the 1968 IDP. Rental companies may ask for it regardless, so bring it.
Do I need a 4x4 in Kyrgyzstan?
Not for the main roads: the Bishkek to Osh highway, the Issyk-Kul loop and Osh to Sary-Tash are asphalt. Song-Kul over Kalmak-Ashuu is a maintained gravel track, and the other two Song-Kul roads are 4x4 territory; Kel-Suu is reached with a hired 4x4 driver from Naryn. If your plan is a loop of the country, rent the 4x4 and spend less on everything else.
Can I take a rental car from Kyrgyzstan to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan or Tajikistan?
Only with the company's written permission, a power of attorney from the owner and the car's papers, and since 1 May 2025 Kyrgyzstan requires a notarised general power of attorney to re-enter in a car registered to someone else. Most companies keep their cars inside the country; the few that allow Kazakhstan charge a fee and say so in their terms. Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are rarely allowed.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Kyrgyzstan?
In Bishkek, as of November 2026, an older sedan is $30 to $45 a day (AutoPark from $30, Nomad Car Rental from $40), a Forester-class crossover $65 to $70 (Prestige, AutoPark), a 4Runner $100 to $130 and a Prado $150. Deposits are typically $300 for a car and $500 for an SUV, or 30,000 som on a credit card at AYDO; WeRent takes none. WeRent's rates fall about 15% at 14 days and Russian Troika gives 10 to 15% off for prepayment; airport hand-over runs from free (WeRent) through 1,000 som (Nomad) to 2,500 som (Russian Troika).
What happens if a camera catches me speeding in a rental?
Safe City and Avtouragan cameras on the main roads record speed, seat belts, phones and oncoming-lane driving (2026), and the notice goes to the registered owner, which is the rental company. Expect the company to pass it on to you; ask how before you sign. Late-payment penalties on traffic fines were abolished in February 2024, and fines can be paid at terminals, including at Manas airport before you fly.
